In the 1940s, M.C. Gaines sold his All-American Comics line to his partners at DC Comics. But what if, instead, he had bought out DC? And suppose Green Lantern and The Flash had become the surviving heroes of the Golden Age, with new versions of Superman and Batman launching the Silver Age of Comics? Comic book industry veteran Bob Rozakis delivers a fascinating tale of what might have been, complete with art from the Earth-AA archives!

I bought the book hoping to see alternate takes on classic DC heroes. I was expecting to see a Superman who was to Action Comic #1 what Barry Allen was to Flash Comics #1 from the 1940's. But this book is more about internal company politics. The core idea is that Superman and Batman never took off in the 1940's so all those radio shows, cartoons, movie serials and TV shows instead starred Jay Garrick and Alan Scott. And when the Silver Age came we still got Barry Allen except that he was now called Superman and Hal Jordan was not part of a space police group called "Batmen" rather than Green Lanterns.

There was a certain charm to seeing Rozakis rework the Supergirl and Legion cocepts to fit Alan Scott's Green Lantern. Same with thinks like having a 1966 Jay Garrick Flash TV show in place of the Adam West Batman one. But these were interesting footnotes around Rozakis' main text which focused on how Mort Weisinger (who in our world was in charge of Superman) tried to position himself in this alternate history using Green Lantern and how this alternate company managed to challenge Marvel Comics by not alienating Jack Kirby in the 1970's.

Botom line I was looking for an alternate DC Comics Universe- one where the comics told different stories- what I got was a world where largely the same comics were published the difference was the heroes starring in them. It's a world where Frank Miller still brought back a classic hero in a popular 1980's graphic novel- just that it wasn't Batman this time. It's a world where we still had a Crisis in 1985/86 but some of the major players are swapped out. And a world where in the 1990's Alan Scott and not Clark Kent was killed off facing a Doomsdayish foe.

I wasn't totally disappointed but if you aren't a fan of comic book politics and real world comic history- this is not the book for you.

receiver loved it, thanks
Very interesting history of DC Comics.
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I ordered this book, but I thought the premise sounded interesting... Well, I read it and i'm still not sure what I think of it. The premise is good, but it tends to get a little bogged down with the 'Office Politics' of the supposed 'AA' comics..... Overall it wasn't bad though, but it's strictly for the die-hards in my opinion.
For devoted comics buffs, this is just a really fun extrapolation of how the "other" DC developed. Truly entertaining!
